Final Exhibition: Nina Øverli - Be with me
The Exhibition is part of the final examination in the Curating Art Master Programme.
Be with me is a group show addressed to and celebrating art history. Showing in Sweden for the first time, the three artists each work with dynamic links between past and present.
18 Feb - 24 Mar, 2012
Be with me, which is at once a need and a command, refers to a desire to understand the attitudes and forms that have given shape to past practices precisely by re-living these, by being with them in a kind of simultaneous embrace and reenactment. Showing will be paintings, films, sculpture and performance pieces that evoke figures from the past by making deliberate use of forms known to us from art history; oil paint, bronze, ceramic. Reused and reconfigured here in subtly destabilizing ways these old forms are reactivated. They act in a dialogue that highlights the degree to which past practices have become partially obscure and lost on us in the present, as the thought systems that gave life to them are no longer ours. The work in this exhibition addresses this loss, as it recalls the
figures from the past in a spirit of wanting to be close, to be with them. In their active embrace of old formats and the subtle re-workings of these, these artists’ work comes to represent a reversal of that loss which offers up a spirit of energy and release.
Be with me is curated by Nina Øverli.
